Crystals are a gift from nature. Some crystals can help us to heal while others can aid us on our spiritual journey. The ways to work with crystals are far-reaching and if you are mindful and learn how to take care of your crystals, you can gain maximum benefit when working with them.
There are lots of ways to cleanse and charge crystals. You can use earth, smoke, fire, water, moonlight, sunlight and even certain crystals have the ability to cleanse other crystals.
Earth: You can bury your crystals either directly in the earth or you can place them in a glass jar and bury the jar in the earth. Leave them there for a few days to soak up earth’s natural energies. If you are worried about finding them again, you could also try burying them in a pot of soil. Make sure you throw the soil away after use though; the soil will absorb any negative energies from the crystals so you wont want to re-use it.
Smoke: You can use a sage stick to cleanse and charge your crystals, this is known as smudging. You can also use an incense stick such as sage or sandalwood. You simply hold the crystal in the smoke for a few moments. Quick and easy!
Fire: You can hold a crystal in a candle flame for a few seconds. A direct flame burns away any negative energies within just a few seconds. Do this quickly so as not to damage or discolour the crystal. This is a very quick and easy method, especially if you only have one or two crystals to cleanse.
Water: Holding your crystals in a voile bag under running water is a great way to cleanse away any negative energy. This works well if you have a lot of crystals to cleanse at once. A stream, seawater or river is best but running tap water will work too. You must be careful with this method though as some crystals may corrode in water. Moonlight: Perhaps the most widely used method, lunar energy is perfect for cleansing and charging and all crystals are safe to be left in moonlight. Ideally place outside under the direct light of a full moon. Otherwise, an indoor windowsill that receives direct moonlight will also work. And while full moon energy is most potent, other moon phases will also charge your crystals; each phase carries a different energy. Put them out at different times of the month and see if you find a difference.
Sunlight: Cleansing and charging with sunlight can give the crystal a very different energy than when charged with lunar energy. It is worth experimenting with the two to see which suits you best. Place the crystal in sunlight for around 4 to 8 hours. Some crystals may fade in direct sunlight (for example, Rose Quartz, Citrine and Amethyst) so keep that in mind if using this method. It is best to set crystals in a bright windowsill rather than direct sunlight for any length of time.
Other crystals: Certain crystals have the ability to cleanse and charge other crystals. For example, placing a crystal on an amethyst cluster will cleanse and charge it. Amethyst, Selenite, Citrine and Carnelian are perhaps the most popular crystals for cleansing and charging other crystals. All you need to do is put the stone that you want to rejuvenate on top of or beside the cleansing crystal (eg. Amethyst, Selenite or Citrine) for at least seven hours. Carnelian is best used by placing a tumbled piece into a pouch or box with other crystals.
I personally like to keep things simple. I usually go for the quick and easy method of cleansing any new crystals with the smoke from either a sage stick or an incense stick. I then set them on the windowsill once a month when there is a full moon. If I have worked with a particular crystal a lot or if feel it needs a quick cleanse, I pop them in my Selenite dish.
It’s important that you take care of your crystals so that they will continue to help you with your energy work. Look after your crystals and they will look after you.
